BPAL!
flails

I had first heard of the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab from

cadhla and aigletat a VM gathering, and then began hearing more about them online.  I spent all of the downtime in one of my rehearsal periods last fall going through their site, reading the descriptions of the scents, and enjoying the widespread mythology that they pulled from.  There were several things I wanted to buy, not because I had any particular sense of how they'd smell but because I loved the idea of them (all of the Carnivale Diabolique scents for example).  I ordered t-shirts and a locket from the trading post (and got a few imps - whee) but had yet to make an actual Lab purchase.  Until now.

I really loved the idea of both lunacy scents this month, and that was enough to get me filling out an order.  I ordered three small bottles and six imps of things I had been wanting to try.  My box arrived this morning and though I didn't have tons of time to play with it here are the things I noticed in the few minute I did have.

1)  I enjoy all three of the bottled scents while in their bottles a lot (Thunder Moon, Blue Moon, and Carnivale Diablolique)
2)  The trading card and other postcardage they sent are really fun; I enjoy their graphics a lot.
3)  They sent extra imps just for fun, in fact they doubled the number of imps I had requested plus a little!  I didn't have time to start sniffing at all of them yet.
4)  I really like Blue Moon on me.  (I had to wear one today after all).  I'm not very good at describing scents, sadly.  They describe it like so:
Mugwort and bay, for psychic sensitivity…
Juniper, for divination through dreams…
Orchid and galbanum, for complexity, wisdom and noscere…
… with a potent lunar-charged blend of exquisite Asian woods, moonflower, Madagascan ylang ylang, Florentine iris, Greek cypress, davana, green tea absolute, palmarosa, cucumber, Clary sage, melilot trefoils, wood aloes, and pale creeping buttercup.

It went on a little strong, but faded within 20 minutes to a damp, deep floral kind of smell - kind of musky.  Interestingly, it actually left marks on my wrist - like they were dirty where I had put the scent on about 20 minutes later (with a little rubbing that went away).  Seven hours later the scent is still present though not overpowering which is perfect for me.

So whee!  I have all kinds of new perfumes to try now.  I haven't worn much scent in a long time, with enough people having allergies these days we usally declare the theatre to be a scent-free zone just on principal.  Hopefully a few things I have will be light enough I can circumvent that, or I can just wear things on my day off.  And so begins a new addiction.

I have heard such wonderful things about BPAL and I keep resisting buying them because I just don't think I can afford to become addicted to something new right now. Hee! But I'm glad that you had a positive experience with them. I, too, rarely wear scent because I'm worried that I'll set off someone's allergies, but I may have to try BPAL soon. *resistance caving*

Well if you try the imps you get six for $20 and can try things without making a huge investment. Their customer service is fabulous too. But yes, they can definitely be addicting so be careful.

Fun fun! The only BPAL I own is Jack, which as you may recall, burns when I get it in my eye.

I've heard some people on my flist talk about BPAL swaps...have you investigated that at all?

And are you still doing Bunny of the Month?

I haven't looked into BPAL swaps because I really didn't have anything to swap. But now that I do, I know they've had small get togethers in SF before, so I'll have to track them down. Heh.

I haven't done Bunny of the Month in a while, it is rather expensive. And how many bunnies does one person need? But I think I may have to get a few more this fall, just for funsies.

Oh my goodness, that site looks cool. I'm thinking I'm going to end up ordering something. Gothic perfume! What more could I ask for!

That was exactly my first reaction. Have fun exploring!
