LJ Idol week 12: The sincerest form of flattery

David and I had a flirtatious friendship.  It was mostly talk with the occasional snuggle.  In my college theatre department that was pretty much par for the course, and I never thought much of it.  For my senior year I decided to move way off campus with my good friend Ian, another guy named Brian, and David.

The house was dirt cheap because it only had two bedrooms officially.  Brian and David lived there over the summer and did a lot of work, including paying someone to come and haul all of the random junk out of the basement, converting it into additional living space.  I had one of the basement rooms.  It was a little strange having only one very small window, and it was difficult to hang posters on cement, but once we defeated the snails it wasn’t so bad.  I acquired some new furniture, including a queen size bed that a professor was getting rid of, and made myself at home.

My boyfriend at the time was from my college town, but went to a school four hours away.  Staying at his parents would have been a little awkward, so when Shawn was in town he usually came over to my place.  One weekend shortly after I had moved in he had to get up early to get back to his own campus for a lunch something and I slept in a bit later.  When I got upstairs to the kitchen to make breakfast, David was there grinning at me.

“So, you had a good time last night” he sing-songed at me.

“Very funny.  Did you see Shawn leave?”

“Nope.”

“Do I glow?  Is something hanging from my ear?”

“Nope and nope.”

“So what are you talking about?”

“I could hear you.”

“Oh God.  Oh, David, I’m really sorry.”  My face got instantly warm as I flushed.

“No, don’t be.  It was good.”

At this point, all of the alarm bells in my head started going off.  “Define good.”

“Well, you guys sounded like you were having a really good time…”

“Sounded – how did you hear us?”

“There’s a vent in the floor of my closet.  It opens into your room.”

“What?”

“I know, I hadn’t noticed before last night.”

“Okay, so we block it up.”  Our roommate Brian was incredibly handy in the scene shop; I figured he could rig something.  Problem solved, right?  Wrong.

David, still grinning, said “I’d rather leave it open.”

“Why?”  A thought occurred to me.  “You couldn’t see anything could you?”

“Oh no, just hear.”

“So …”

“And you guys were having such a good time, I decided to join in.”

“You WHAT?”

“I masturbated to the sounds of you having sex with Shawn.  It was good for me too, in case you’re wondering.”

I stood frozen in the kitchen for several beats, trying to process.  David leaned back against the counter sipping his coffee, still grinning.  Finally I managed to recover the ability to speak.

“I’m not sure what I should think of this.”

“Eh – it doesn’t hurt anyone and Shawn doesn’t come to town all that often anyway.  Besides, everyone’s happy this morning.”

I couldn’t think of a response to that.  I finished my cereal and made him show me the vent so I could see for myself that there wasn’t a visual connection between our rooms, only an aural one.  I could feel David watching me for the next several days, wondering what I was going to do.

In the end, I did nothing.  The next time Shawn was in town we watched a movie with all of my roommates before the two of us headed downstairs.  I saw David wink at me with a big smile on his face as he suddenly informed Brian and Ian that he was going to go to bed too.  We never talked about it again.

But hey, everyone was happy.

@@@This is my entry for week 12 of LJ Idol.  Yes this story is true.  Other entries on the topic "(imitation is) the sincerest form of flattery" can be found here.  There are less than 100 of us still in this thing currently and everyone is fun to read.@@@

I'll take creepy and funny, that was pretty much my reaction at the time. Thanks.
